Como institución fundamental, la familia recibe y a la vez configura el orden social en que se inscribe. La familia puede evaluarse a la luz de los presupuestos morales encarnados en la cosmovisión de la cultura que la alberga; estos desbordan el ámbito familiar para configurar las relaciones fundamentales que marcan la vida humana. En este contexto, la problemática ambiental ha obligado a una reconsideración profunda de la relación con el mundo que se configuró a partir del desarrollo del capitalismo. Esta relación ayuda a entender las formas familiares que se han dado en las sociedades de la modernidad occidental, en donde el vínculo familiar se subordina a los imperativos funcionales de dominio de dicho sistema, los cuales adoptan en la actualidad el paradigma tecnológico En el mundo indígena se construye, en cambio, una visión del mundo basado en el parentesco entre la naturaleza y la humanidad como lo demuestra la noción de Madre Tierra. Así, el concepto de familia indígena se constituye en una fuente de sentido para cuestionar las actitudes congeladas por la racionalidad capitalista que ahora, en la época de la racionalidad instrumental-tecnológica, plantean una crisis de alcances inéditos. La visión indígena de la familia recupera memorias compartidas y una infinidad de prácticas cotidianas que muestra el entrelazamiento íntimo que une al mundo de la vida.
