Abstract
Criticism of idealistic analyses of activism has led French political science to neglect the study of the political ideas of social movement actors. Given the increasing intellectualisation of activism (expertisation; academisation), this article calls for the reintroduction of activists’ ideas into the analysis of activism. I suggest that a non-idealistic sociology of activist political ideas should be based on a sociology of the groups that appropriate them. This approach combines conceptual tools forged by the French “social history of political ideas” with those of the Anglophone micro-sociology of activism (“collective identity”, “group style”). In order to illustrate this analytical framework, I focus on the appropriations of queer theory by antiauthoritarian feminists in Berlin and Montreal in the 2010s. I show that these appropriations are as much based on group dynamics as they are shaped by them.
