Abstract Understanding the flow of suspensions through porous media is crucial, particularly in applications such as grouting, waterflooding, and hydraulic fracturing. Previous research indicates that the investigations into the mechanisms underlying the transient coupled flow phenomenon have been insufficient to fully understand the complex phenomenon. The present study employs an experimental methodology, aided with X-ray CT images, to examine the particle migration process resulting in the formation of an internal filer cake and other migration characteristics. This study comprehensively investigates the qualitative and quantitative evolution of particle migration alongside the filter cake formation. In this study, drilling fluid is used as a suspension to investigate particle migration. It is observed that both the filter cake and the filtration zone expand over time, leading to an increase in the injection pressure.
