Abstract
This chapter describes case reports that reveal the complexity of disease in rabbits and rodents. Vitamin A deficiency or excess can provoke release of hydrolases as a result of compromised structural and functional integrity of cellular lysosomes. In particular, excess vitamin A promotes decreased plasma and liver vitamin E levels, which can contribute to reproductive problems. Vitamin E is an essential dietary substance that protects cellular membranes and organelles from endogenous peroxidation. Conjunctival overgrowth or hyperplasia is an unusual abnormality unique to the rabbit, in which conjunctival tissue grows across the sclera onto the cornea. Drooling or ptyalism in rabbits may be caused by malocclusion, or the dewlap may become wet and abraded if the rabbit feeds or drinks from crocks. Obese females are predisposed to this condition. Cytomegalovirus infection produces eosinophilic intranuclear inclusions in submandibular salivary gland ductular epithelial cells.
