Abstract
This chapter describes selected diseases and conditions prevalent in companion and laboratory rabbits and rodents, fur or meat rabbits, and of importance to biomedical research and public health. Differences in normal flora, housing and management conditions, and diet result in significant differences in disease incidence in rabbits and rodents housed as companions, for food or fur production, or worked with in research. A major difference between research rabbits and rodents and companion animals of the same species is life span. Ectoparasites can be diagnosed in rodents and rabbits in many ways, and they persist in numerous colonies and individual animals because they continue to be challenging to detect and control. In the live animal, adult mites, such as the rabbit ear mite, can sometimes be seen moving on the host with the unaided eye. Adenocarcinoma of the uterine endometrium is the most common spontaneously occurring tumor of rabbits.
