Abstract
L’histoire de la vannerie w8banaki (abénakise) constitue un symbole fort de résistance et de continuité culturelles. Cette pratique ancestrale, au coeur de l’identité de cette Première Nation, s’est adaptée et a évolué avec leur mode de vie. Elle a permis la continuité d’une territorialité bien singulière qui s’exprime encore aujourd’hui par le biais de la relation des W8banakiak avec maalhakws, le frêne noir, et wli mskiko, le foin d’odeur. En s’intéressant à cet art remarquable, on ne peut qu’admirer la contribution des femmes w8banakiak à la survie de la Nation, alors qu’elles étaient les principales pourvoyeuses du village pendant près de deux siècles. On peut ainsi postuler que ce pan de l’histoire w8banaki fut à la source de leur mobilisation sociale et politique féministe, qui constitue encore aujourd’hui un aspect très distinctif de cette société. Enfin, elle met en lumière les biais de l’historicité occidentale qui a oblitéré l’apport central des femmes à la survie des peuples autochtones.
