Abstract
From a Western perspective, the interwar and post-war periods of the 20th century were foundational in the establishment of formal built environment professions in Australia. The First Nations cultural landscape that these professions built on have existed for many millennia longer and are best known as Country. Architect, town planner and co-founder of Environment-Behaviour Studies (EBS) Amos Rapoport wrote numerous publications in the late 1960s and early 1970s that explored the relationship of Aboriginal and Western conceptions of the cultural landscape as part of his global comparative studies. However, unlike his fellow “anti-architect” Robin Boyd, and (Sir) John Buchan, little is known about Amos Rapoport. This paper explores Rapoport’s work, its influences and what it influenced, as well as its appropriateness today among the burgeoning First Nations publications relating to the Australian built environment. Finally, it places Rapoport among contemporary conceptual and theoretical investigations into the cultural landscape and proposes revisions to his EBS framework for future investigations into the Australian cultural landscape.
