Support Students' Skill Development Through Competency‐Based Reflection Journals
Bibliographic record
Abstract
ABSTRACT The technical and general skillsets required to be successful in geographic information science and technology (GIS&T) are diverse. Drawing on a case study, we examined the integration of competency‐based reflective assignments into a GIS&T capstone project course. These reflection assignments were designed to assess (1) the competencies students initially considered important to succeed in GIS&T, (2) the role of the capstone project in supporting competency development, and (3) student perception of the role of reflection assignments in relation to competency development. Results show that students overlooked a few competencies in their initial reflections, including geospatial thinking, critical and creative thinking, and formal communication skills. Through the completion of a GIS&T capstone project, students were able to develop or gain awareness of these skills. The reflection assignments were particularly important in supporting the development of competencies related to writing, metacognition, and critical thinking skills.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
