Abstract
Comment situer la figure singulière que fut celle du peintre-graveur Rodolphe Duguay dans les bouleversements qui, au milieu du XXe siècle, ont marqué l'histoire de l'art chez nous ? L'artiste nicolétain a voulu faire carrière trop discrète dans son patelin, loin des grands centres. Il a vécu à une époque de transition où, au Québec, crises économiques, révolutions urbaines, sociales, religieuses et... picturales polarisaient l'attention de nos critiques d'art sur les mouvements de la métropole. Mais la fin du siècle avait commencé à réviser des « refus » par trop globalisants... Le figuratif, un temps gommé, reprend forme, capable de servir l'expression artistique contemporaine. Le talent de Rodolphe Duguay avait déjà été célébré : dès la mort de Duguay (1973), La Galerie nationale du Canada (l'actuel Musée des beaux-arts du Canada) organisait une exposition itinérante en hommage au graveur pour rappeler la renommée qu'a connue ce pionnier de la gravure sur bois au milieu des années 30. En 1979, c'est le Musée du Québec qui présentait une rétrospective de la production multiforme de l'artiste. Il était plus que temps, maintenant, qu'un livre lui soit consacré.
