Abstract
Dans son ouvrage Antoine-Aimé Dorion et le déclin du libéralisme républicain et émancipateur , paru en 2023, l’historien Yvan Lamonde avait montré pourquoi l’idée d’émancipation coloniale s’était estompée au xixe siècle. Dans cette nouvelle proposition, il retrace les péripéties de l’idée d’indépendance du Canada français et du Québec depuis un siècle, et s’attache à comprendre comment l’idée d’indépendance renaît à droite au début du xxe siècle, puis évolue à gauche dans les années 1960. En 1961, André d’Allemagne estimait que l’idée d’indépendance n’avait pu aboutir parce qu’elle avait été trop associée à des « théories » (Providence, corporatisme, fascisme) auxquelles les Canadiens français ne pouvaient adhérer tout en appuyant un projet d’indépendance. L’histoire faite ici de ces projets d’indépendance du Canada français, de la Laurentie et du Québec passe par l’analyse des argumentaires de chacun de ces projets, de leur évolution et de leur délestage des « théories » qui y étaient greffées. De Tardivel, Groulx, des Jeune-Canada et de La Nation au Parti québécois, en passant par le Centre d’information nationale, l’Alliance laurentienne et le Rassemblement pour l’indépendance nationale, on verra comment se sont levés des écrous.
