À la fin des années soixante, le gouvernement canadien a permis l’utilisation du défoliant agent orange sur une de ses bases militaires. Près de deux décennies plus tard, les effets nocifs de ce défoliant furent confirmés et les personnes exposées au produit, autant civiles que militaires, entamèrent des recherches documentaires afin de préparer un dossier de réclamation envers le gouvernement canadien. De son côté, le gouvernement canadien a entrepris sa propre recherche en archives afin de documenter les décisions prises par les autorités gouvernementales de l’époque. Le cas de l’agent orange illustre comment les archives gouvernementales conservées à Bibliothèque et Archives Canada ont permis d’étayer les droits des victimes potentielles.
