Integrating Canadian Newcomers into Hybrid Workplaces: Employers’ Views on Hiring and Onboarding

Abstract
This study explores perceptions of Canadian employers with regard to the workplace integration of immigrant newcomers during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on “soft skills” and “Canadian experience” as two aspects of Canadian workplace culture. Based on focus group interviews with 25 employers, the study identifies challenges newcomers face in hybrid workplaces that demand a combination of digital and soft skills. Employers consider the development of soft skills and cultural competency to be essential for successful integration. However, cultural humility and intelligence may better support newcomers. Future research should further explore the complexities of intercultural communication in hybrid workplaces.
