Abstract
Oral health is an integral part of one’s overall health and well-being. The mouth itself has important social and cultural values; a ‘good’ smile is indicative of health, beauty, economic standing and sociability. In turn, as this edited volume demonstrates, how we view the mouth and oral health has been, and continues to be, shaped by various social, cultural, political and economic forces, such as the state, government policy, consumerism, the media, big business and professionalism, amongst others. Despite this, oral health and dentistry have been much-neglected subjects across different areas of scholarship, particularly within the humanities. Cultures of Oral Health, edited by Claire L. Jones and Barry J. Gibson, addresses this gap in current literature, bringing together a diverse range of scholars to address the ways in which various actors, institutions, technologies and bodies of knowledge have shaped understandings, meanings and experiences of oral health. Historians, literary scholars, sociologists, dentists, medical ethnographers and anthropologists present research that pries the mouth away from, and beyond, the sole scope of the dental profession. Across 14 chapters, the contributors provide nuanced, illuminating perspectives on how meanings and understandings of oral health have developed across the globe.
