The Canadian Contribution to the Polish Military Effort During the First World War: From Secrecy and Improvisation to Success

Abstract
In Polish historiography and national tradition, the enlistment of Polish volunteers in America and their training at the military camp in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada, during the First World War is typically portrayed from a Polish perspective. Furthermore, Canadian assistance is often depicted as a gesture of friendship. However, this article examines the Canadian perspective and argues that Canada’s actions were not entirely altruistic. Ottawa committed to raising an army of half a million soldiers in pursuit of a stronger and more independent position within the British Empire. This goal proved challenging, prompting Ottawa to seek recruits from outside Canada. The patriotic efforts of the Polish community in the United States, which remained neutral until April 1917, offered an excellent opportunity for Canadian military organisers.
