Abstract
Contrairement aux idées reçues, le musée de cire comme institution ne disparaît pas à l’avènement du cinéma. Il survit contre vents et marées, certains musées continuent à prospérer, d’autres ouvrent. L’une des raisons de cette survivance du musée de cire est peut-être qu’il offre au spectateur une expérience singulière qu’aucune autre attraction ne peut offrir, pas même le cinéma : un effet de « présence réelle », une proximité physique. Le musée de cire pourrait bien ainsi révéler une dimension importante de l’esthétique spectatorielle moderne, mais négligée par les historiens : l’horizon du spectacle est peut-être non pas tant l’illusion visuelle que la présence tactile, le désir qui le porte est peut-être moins un désir de vérité qu’un désir de réalité. Pour tester cette hypothèse, nous examinons ici un cas exemplaire : celui du Musée historique canadien, dit le Musée de cire de Montréal, qui est fondé en 1935 et qui va prospérer jusqu’en 1989. Nous revenons sur l’histoire de l’institution et tâchons de reconstituer l’expérience qu’elle offrait au spectateur.
