Abstract
Abstract Ge.o.to.ga. Gr. fem. n. gê , earth; L. fem. n. toga , Roman outer garment; N.L. fem. n. Geotoga , the earth outer garment. Geotoga spp. are members of the phylum Thermotogota , class Thermotogae, order Petrotogales , family Petrotogaceae . The genus Geotoga includes two species with validly published names, G. petraea and G. subterranea . The cells usually appear singly, in pairs, or in chains within a sheath. The cells form enlarged spherical bodies in the stationary phase. Geotoga spp. are Gram‐stain negative, thermophilic, strictly anaerobic, fermentative bacteria. All strains of the genus reduce sulfur and thiosulfate. Known habitat is oil reservoirs. DNA G + C content (mol%) : 29.5–29.9 (HPLC), 29.4 ( G. petraea genome). Type species : Geotoga petraea Davey et al. 1993, VL47.
