Abstract
Abstract The period between the Great Depression and the 1970s was one of unprecedented economic growth in Canada, and it resulted in a marked expansion of social policies. In addition to extending early efforts to provide old age pensions and unemployment benefits, the federal government ventured into the provision of daycare for children, family allowances for the parents of young children, hospital and healthcare for all, and contributory pensions for the employed. This meant an expansion of the powers of the federal government alongside a broader understanding of the role of the state in the provision of a social safety net.
