Abstract
Après l’adjonction de la pêche à la morue à Terre-Neuve au début du xvie siècle, le commerce avec les Antilles constitua une étape capitale dans la vie du port de Nantes. Place régionale, tournée vers les commerces traditionnels, Nantes disposait également d’un rayonnement européen dû notamment aux échanges entretenus avec la péninsule Ibérique. L’aventure antillaise entamée au xviie siècle permit à Nantes de passer d’un commerce à structure médiévale prolongée au xvie siècle, vers le grand commerce transatlantique qui a assuré sa fortune au xviiie siècle. Le cœur du sujet correspond à l’analyse des conditions de la réussite de cette transition. Comment le port de Nantes est-il devenu un port « moderne » ouvert à l’échelle atlantique et s’intégrant dans les dynamismes de cet espace ? Ce travail entend dégager les mécanismes matériels, économiques et étatiques qui ont permis ce basculement durant le règne de Louis XIV (1661-1697).
