Abstract
This chapter presents a methodological design that foregrounds migrants’ experiences and the subjective transformation they undergo in the process of communication and exchange of narratives about their lives. We present fieldwork results from research on Cuban immigrants in the city of Montréal. We argue that the “processes of becoming” diasporic for the migrants we interviewed pervades the Cuban diasporic community’s daily life in Montréal, including the processes through which these subjects create transnational bonds, which also involve digital practices (Facebook and WhatsApp, for example) that affirm and transform their identities and lives. Our epistemological approach is based on Foucault’s notion of heterotopia, which highlight the ways Cuban migrants have attempted to transform their way of life, including their strategies to appropriate aspects of different cultures in Montréal as well as their inventive work elaborating and juxtaposing other possible spaces of experience, including familiar spaces, inside what is an unfamiliar society. We argue that the notion of heterotopia allows us to think about the heterogeneity of coexistent temporalities in the migratory spaces Cuban migrants inhabit and “travel.”
