Abstract
A 2022 study found that over half of Chicago-area medical schools did not include female sexual functioning in their curricula, focusing instead on basic anatomy.1 Practicing physicians report similar gaps, identifying inadequate training as a key barrier to screening and treating sexual dysfunction.1 We propose and evaluate a supplemental curriculum to address this deficiency in preclinical medical education. Female sexual dysfunction affects approximately 40% of women worldwide and is defined as a disorder of sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, or pain causing personal distress and negatively impacting quality of life and relationships.1,2 Despite its prevalence, medical training remains insufficient; although most students anticipate addressing sexual health in their careers, only 37.6% feel adequately prepared.3 This study evaluates a women’s sexual health (WSH) curriculum designed to improve knowledge and preparedness, using an established institutional curriculum model and content informed by a prior needs-assessment survey identifying student knowledge gaps and areas of interest.
