Cet article explore à travers une revue de cadrage les défis et les opportunités de la transition socioécologique dans les villes intermédiaires, situées à l’interface entre les métropoles et les communautés rurales. L’analyse s’articule autour de trois axes principaux : la reconnexion équitable des milieux urbanisés à la nature, la restructuration de la gouvernance urbaine et la promotion d’innovations diversifiées. Même si la plupart des éléments de cette transition sont communs aux villes en général, ceux observés dans les villes intermédiaires prennent une ampleur spécifique en raison des facteurs qui les caractérisent. Ces spécificités incluent une gestion plus complexe des zones tampons écologiques entre les zones urbaines et rurales, une intégration plus exigeante des politiques de développement urbain avec les pratiques agricoles et de conservation, et une adaptation des innovations à la dualité de leur contexte urbain-rural.
