Abstract
In 1967, Canada celebrated its centennial year. Expo 67, a six-month-long event held in Montréal, Quebec, headlined the anniversary, showcasing the cultural, social, and technological achievements of more than sixty participating nations. The Expo’s Canadian Pavilion strived to reflect how Canadians contribute to the progression of their country internally and develop relationships with other countries. This pavilion was juxtaposed by the Indians of Canada Pavilion; while Canada post-confederation flourished, Indigenous populations suffered. The exhibit used old and contemporary Indigenous artworks to critique the federal government, exposing the poverty, unfair treaties, and horrors faced by children in residential schools. This paper considers how the Indians of Canada Pavilion marked a watershed in the Indigenous rights movement by promoting Indigenous culture and calling into question governmental and religious powers in an international forum.
