An Autoethnographic Journey of How I Almost Died from Postpartum Depression

Abstract
Maternal suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in Canada, and the author was almost part of that statistic. This autoethnographic journey of pregnancy problems, traumatic birth, and postpartum depression will demonstrate how mothers are often overlooked. This oversight reverberates across perinatal mental health care, as insufficient resources and funding compound with limited access to and poor quality of care. This journey will demonstrate how the health care system failed the author and failed other mothers. By sharing the author’s experience alongside medical notes, this autoethnographic journey constructs a clear map of how poor continuity of care, lack of collaboration amongst professionals, and training can impact a mother. This work contributes to broader knowledge by capturing the struggles of motherhood and speaking openly about such struggles in a public forum.
