Rétrospectivement, l’ethno-jazz d’il y a un demi-siècle en train de s’inventer avant de devenir world music ressemble à une rencontre musicale interculturelle asymétrique, plus bénéfique aux industries culturelles du nord qu’aux musiques du sud. Yusef Lateef en a-t-il été l’une des sources ? Par trop d’éclectisme, de superficialité ? De bonnes intentions menant à une impasse ? Afin de corriger les leurres de la rétrospection et de la généralisation, on tente de changer d’échelle et de saisir le contexte de 1961 afin de vraiment entendre « The Plum Blossom », petite composition jouée au xūn chinois et enregistrée en combo. Cette exploration instrumentale des confins du jazz consolidés par ses choix religieux et pédagogiques révèle plutôt chez Lateef une indifférence à l’endroit des fixations identitaires.
