Abstract
En se fondant sur une analyse croisant l’histoire des idées et un matériau qualitatif inédit, cet article cherche à examiner la nature des croyances au sein du Temple Satanique. Il démontre que la figure de Satan a été d’abord transformée et détraditionnalisée de son cadre chrétien afin de servir des revendications artistiques et politiques en marge des institutions traditionnelles, puis utilisée par des groupes satanistes non théistes dans un cadre ultramoderne de recomposition du champ spirituel et religieux. Au sein de celui-ci, le symbole de Satan est une figure de liberté et d’émancipation vis-à-vis du milieu religieux traditionnel américain. Toutefois, l’article analyse également les tensions autour de l’utilisation des termes de « religion », de « spiritualité » ou encore de « sacré » chez les membres du Temple satanique, démontrant le besoin d’autonomie doxastique et l’importance des foyers identitaires propres à l’ultramodernité.
