Abstract
Cet article porte sur la vie et la mémoire du protestant colonisateur Pierre Dugua, fondateur de l’Acadie (1604), de Port-Royal (1605) et co-fondateur (dans le sens de bailleur de fonds) de Québec (1608). Malgré son importance dans l’histoire de la Nouvelle-France, ce pionnier saintongeais tombe injustement dans l’oubli au profit de son lieutenant converti au catholicisme, Samuel Champlain, jusqu’au xxe siècle. Nous commençons par retracer le rôle de Dugua dans la création des premiers établissements permanents français en Amérique du Nord avant d’examiner sa patrimonialisation progressive au xxe siècle. La mémoire de Dugua renaît d’abord en Acadie devenue anglaise, tant dans les provinces maritimes canadiennes que dans l’État américain du Maine, ensuite en Saintonge et enfin à Québec.
