Abstract
L’attaque de Champlain et de ses alliés amérindiens contre les Agniers à l’été 1609 ouvre un cycle de bellicosité entre les établissements français du Canada et la Confédération iroquoise auquel la grande paix de Montréal met un terme en 1701. Cette entrée en guerre, sans déclaration préalable, répond à la promesse de soutien d’Henri IV aux Montagnais qui favorisèrent, entre 1598 et 1608, le succès de l’implantation française dans la vallée du Saint-Laurent. Elle définit alors un changement non seulement fondateur dans les orientations géographiques de la pénétration française dans le continent nord-américain, substituant le Saint-Laurent aux côtes acadiennes, mais aussi dans le rôle joué par Champlain dans cette entreprise. Une entreprise au cours de laquelle le passage de l’hostilité acadienne à l’état de guerre contre les Iroquois institue le fondateur de Québec en figure héroïque et en relais efficace d’une possible politique impériale française devant encore composer avec les logiques marchandes de ces prémices coloniaux américains.
