Background: A disfunção cognitiva e a neuropatia são complicações comuns do diabetes mellitus que podem afetar significativamente a qualidade do movimento e as atividades diárias. Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar como a dupla tarefa motora e cognitiva afeta o desempenho funcional em indivíduos com diabetes e neuropatia diabética. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo observacional transversal que envolveu 55 adultos com menos de 60 anos de idade, divididos em três grupos: diabetes (GD), neuropatia periférica diabética (GND) e grupo controle saudável (GC). Os participantes foram submetidos a avaliações usando o Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument, o Montreal Cognitive Assessment e testes funcionais: teste Timed Up and Go, Timed Up and Go com Dual-Task e um teste de velocidade de marcha de 10 metros. Todos os testes foram controlados por um acelerômetro. Resultados: A dupla tarefa aumentou o tempo necessário para completar os testes TUGWDT para todos os grupos (27,7% no GC, 18,8% no GD e 24,7% no DNG). Indivíduos com neuropatia periférica diabética tiveram velocidades de marcha mais lentas do que aqueles sem neuropatia (17% menor) e controles saudáveis (35% menor). O diabetes sozinho também reduziu a velocidade da marcha em comparação com indivíduos saudáveis (22% menor). O custo da dupla tarefa foi mais pronunciado em indivíduos saudáveis. Conclusão: O diabetes e suas complicações afetam o desempenho da dupla tarefa e a velocidade da marcha. Isso destaca a possível necessidade de intervenções físicas e cognitivas para melhorar a qualidade de vida do paciente.
