Abstract
The paper analyses how Haitian and Quebec Indigenous theatre embodies resistance to (neo)colonial structures of domination. Through the study of Anacaona (1986) by Jean Métellus and La Conquête de Mexico (1991) by Yves Sioui Durand, the paper highlights how these works critique both past and present impacts of (neo)colonization by reappropriating the narrative of the First Encounter between Indigenous peoples and the West. Theatre thus becomes a space of struggle, healing, and collective awareness, enabling an “equal parts rewriting” of history that invites the audience to reflect on identity, explore, and promote the (re)discovery of humanity through a decolonial and transcultural approach.
