Les inconduites policières sont-elles des « accidents de parcours », résultats de circonstances spécifiques à un moment précis, ou, au contraire, la manifestation d’un trait latent qui perdurera tout au long de la carrière? La réponse à cette question est cruciale puisqu’elle a de nombreuses implications allant de la sélection des futurs policiers à leur formation continue en cours de carrière. Pourtant, la recherche ne permet pas, pour le moment, d’adopter une position claire sur le sujet. Cet article se concentre sur trois des problèmes identifiés par Harris (2016), soit la définition d’inconduite, la détection des « policiers problématiques » et la pertinence d’une étude longitudinale de la question. La discussion de ces trois enjeux est agrémentée d’exemples tirés de l’Étude de suivi sur les trajectoires académiques et professionnelles des candidats à la profession policière en cours depuis 2019 au Québec.
