Abstract
Seuls (translated as Alone in its English version) is a Franco-Belgian comic series created by the scriptwriter Vehlmann and the artist Gazzotti. It tells the story of children who are dead and in limbo. While the world of limbo seems entrenched in two camps on the verge of a war which the main characters have been given the mission to stop. If they are successful, they may be able to leave the in-between world in which they currently are. Drawing on the works of Mircea Eliade and Bruno Bettelheim on rites of passage and fairy tales, respectively, this article suggests that getting lost is a necessity for the heroes of Seuls in order for them to reemerge as higher selves capable of moving past a Manichean worldview, just like children do in order to reach adulthood, but also to reach a more elevated life in the purely spiritual realm.
