Abstract

Philosophical inquiry and creative arts have been developed in schools to support students’ development of critical thinking skills and empathy, both linked to greater well-being. In such practices, students are often assessed on a final production and not enough on their learning process, leading them to adapt their responses to produce the “right answer.” We argue that both approaches hinder what they were initially thought to favor: introspection skills, self-discovery and, ultimately, well-being, impacting students’ willingness to learn. In this review, we outline how using traditional grading in philosophical inquiry and creative arts can harm student well-being, self-determination and engagement in schools. We offer recommendations on how such practices could be implemented to foster students’ potential in the classroom.
