Il est commun de considérer le hockey en général et le Canadien de Montréal en particulier comme un élément fédérateur de la société québécoise.Une des façons d'apprécier l'importance de ce sport et de cette équipe est de mesurer l'espace qu'ils occupent dans l'ensemble des nouvelles produites par les médias.Selon Influence communication, en 2009, le hockey occupa 6 des 15 premières places des nouvelles les plus citées par les médias traditionnels (hors Internet) sur une période de 15 jours 1 .Le Canadien (congédiement de Guy Carbonneau), ses joueurs actuels ou anciens (affaire Jonathan Roy et Patrick Roy) ainsi que les échanges dans la LNH ont réussi à se hisser au « top 15 » des nouvelles les plus citées dans la période 2004-2009, aux côtés de l'investiture de Barack Obama, des élections provinciales, des attentats de Londres et des fusillades de Virginia Tech et de Dawson.Il est à noter que 40 % des personnalités les plus médiatisées au Québec durant la décennie 2000 appartiennent au monde du hockey.Quand on parle de sport, on parle avant tout de hockey, et du Canadien plus particulièrement, puisque celui-ci occupe 85 % des informations sportives.Au Québec, le sport est 25 fois plus médiatisé que les nouvelles portant sur la pauvreté et la condition des aînés et des autochtones.Un peu plus de trois parties du Canadien ont le même poids médiatique que celui de l'ensemble des nouvelles québécoises sur l'Afrique pendant un an.1.
