Abstract
On a peu réfléchi à la place qu’occupe le théâtre dans la ville de Québec dans la deuxième moitié du xix e siècle. Le présent article revient sur cette période, pour saisir le rôle qu’a pu y jouer le comédien français Alfred Maugard, qui arrive en 1871 avec la Compagnie française des Antilles. Celui-ci a fait toute sa carrière dans les provinces françaises de France, de Suisse et de Belgique et au cours de nombreuses tournées dans les colonies du Pacifique. Arrivant à Québec, il trouve une ville qui n’a pas de théâtre permanent et il y établit la première troupe professionnelle francophone de son histoire. Pendant une décennie, il assure une activité théâtrale avec l’aide des amateurs locaux et malgré l’opposition réitérée des ultramontains et du clergé.
