Abstract
L’historiographie a établi de longue date que la connaissance intellectuelle des espaces maritimes est un phénomène concomitant de l’élargissement de l’horizon des royaumes européens. Cet article explore cette relation entre savoirs géographiques et expansionnisme européen en abordant l’état des pratiques hydrographiques de ceux qui naviguent sur les eaux du golfe et du fleuve Saint-Laurent au xvi e siècle et au début du xvii e siècle. À l’aide de diverses traces laissées notamment dans les traités de navigation, les récits de voyages et un corpus de cartes normandes, le présent article fait état des méthodes d’observation, de consignation de données, de désignation de noms de lieux. Il s’attarde aux rapports entre savoirs vernaculaires et savoirs officiels, à l’influence (ou l’absence d’influence) entre explorateurs et hydrographes, à l’inconstance des données, aux fonctions variées des cartes et à l’implication ambiguë des autorités françaises dans l’accumulation de connaissances d’outre-mer.
