Abstract
Le site archéologique du fort de Ville-Marie dans le Vieux-Montréal a livré une quantité importante de débris métallurgiques témoignant d’activités de production de fer par des artisans métallurgistes locaux et la présence d’un atelier de forge. Provenant de contextes de la deuxième moitié du xvii e siècle, ces vestiges seraient les plus anciens témoins des tentatives de produire du fer à partir de minerai en Nouvelle-France. Les archives documentaires sont muettes sur cette activité en ce lieu, ajoutant à l’intérêt de la découverte archéologique. Avançons l’hypothèse que la nécessité de produire localement du fer est liée au contexte de la foire des fourrures à Montréal et à l’effervescence du milieu de la construction dans une période de pénurie de fer.
