Sur la côte ouest du Canada, dans un contexte marqué par un effacement historique des normativités autochtones, des visions alternatives sont aujourd’hui proposées par les peuples autochtones pour repenser nos rapports aux espaces aquatiques, et particulièrement halieutiques. Ce faisant, ils appellent à ce que leurs rôles d’intendants (stewards) ou de gardiens puissent être pleinement exercés sur ces espaces. À partir d’exemples puisés chez les peuples Kwakwaka’wakw et Nuu-chah-nulth de l’île de Vancouver, cet article montre comment les peuples autochtones d’aujourd’hui prennent acte des résultats d’une histoire particulière afin de proposer des alternatives à la fois innovatrices et en continuité avec les grandes logiques relationnelles qui caractérisent leurs rapports au territoire et à l’eau depuis, on le présume, des temps immémoriaux.
