Principles of Assessment and Instruction for Quality Pedagogy and Learning in Secondary Physical and Health Education: A Snapshot from British Columbia
Bibliographic record
Abstract
Assessment in health and physical education (HPE) courses is necessary to guide teacher planning, inform students of their learning progress, and communicate student learning. However, teachers face many challenges in adapting quality assessment practices, and narratives emerging from students’ post-participation in HPE indicate that students often recall HPE negatively. This article offers strategies for quality assessment in physical and health education classes using the current curriculum and assessment standards from the province of British Columbia in Canada. A backwards design approach to planning and the strategic implementation of a proficiency scale of assessment is outlined. Teacher observation, self-assessment, and student-teacher conferences are also discussed as strategies to support the development of quality secondary HPE assessment, to help create teaching and learning environments that encourage physical literacy and lifelong engagement with physical activity.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
