Abstract
Serious biographical writing on female ballet dancers will tend to consider their attributes as performers, their rôles, and their reception. Less serious writing may concentrate on their sexual relationships. An avenue only recently taken up by scholars is exploring the significant non-amorous relationships that these women cultivated to thrive as professionals. This article studies the careers of dancers Émilie Bigottini (1784-1858) and Fanny Bias (1789-1825), with particular reference to their correspondence with the administrators of the Paris Opéra.
