Abstract
Abstract Religion and education in the United States and Canada are in complex legal and cultural relationships. America’s First Amendment guarantees the freedom to practise one’s religion or no religion without interference by the government while also prohibiting the government from making laws respecting any establishment of religion. Similarly, Canada has a constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion, and a rich diversity of religious traditions and practices. Beyond these basic commonalities, Canada’s relationship of religion and education differs from the US as it is more shaped by the country’s history and constitutional framework. Differences in sincerely held beliefs have resulted in continuing litigation over the years in an attempt to balance individual and group interests at every level of education—in and outside traditional educational settings.
