Abstract
Discussing G.W.F. Hegel’s use of the term “plasticity” in the context of logic, history of philosophy, and aesthetics, this article detects two distinct moments. The first one is related to the general usage of the term in reference to sculptural arts and signifies the idea of the self-fashioning through dialogue. The other moment is related to the question of absolute beginning as a kind of “first word” that sets off the process of science. J.G. Herder’s idea of plasticity rests on the fact that the sense of touch is distinct in that to touch always implies to be touched in return. The absolute beginning, however, seems to be plastic in a different sense since it implies a kind of “touch of the void.” This article suggests that Hegel’s idea of the work of art as a totality from a single cast might be used as a bridge between these two distinct moments of plasticity.
