Abstract
In 1918, in his collection of poems titled Calligrammes, the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire employed typography and page layout to echo the themes inherent in the poetry itself. This technique resonates with his earlier articulation of a distinct vision of plasticity in his essay Les Peintres cubistes. Méditations esthétiques, written five years prior. The deliberate arrangement of words and lines within Calligrammes enhances the reader’s experience by integrating elements of both literary and visual arts. This fusion not only amplifies the visual impact but also underscores the malleability inherent in this poetic expression, akin to the materiality of plastic. Such fusion manifests through the amalgamation of words with each other, the interplay between literary and visual art forms, and the exploration of the three plastic virtues that Apollinaire delves into: purity, unity, and truth.
