Abstract
Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a prevalent and important public health issue which can lead to long-term consequences in various domains of functioning, especially for those sustaining moderate or severe injuries. Often overlooked, sleep disturbances are among the most prevalent and persistent negative consequences of TBI. Research on the etiology, evolution, and treatment of sleep–wake disturbances is still emerging, and rehabilitation professionals are giving increasing attention to these problems. This chapter starts with a general description of the clinical presentation of patients with TBI. It then discusses data on the prevalence, etiology, and nature of sleep disturbances in this patient population and presents considerations for assessment and treatment of insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, and circadian rhythm dysregulation in the context of TBI.
