Abstract
Contemporary novels by three Haitian women (Jan J. Dominique, Myriam J. A. Chancy, and Marie-Célie Agnant) are grounded in a larger historical and cultural context, both in Haiti and in Dyaspora. Silence and madness are not a negation of language, but instead become a refusal of the colonizer and an affirmation of the individual woman who resists on behalf of female generations before her as well as for herself and her offspring. Forgetting becomes an act of constructing memory syncretically and relationally, writing as testifying, the production of histories from stories both personal and national. The role of exile in this dyaspora is also explored, as these Haitian authors write from the remove of Canada or the US. Haunted by the Middle Passage and a history scarred by colonialism and then the neo-colonial presence of the US in Haiti from 1915 to the present, post-earthquake, these narratives are also guided by the ancestors and by figures such as the Métrès Dlo and Ezili/Erzulie.
