Abstract
This chapter examines depictions of Caribbean migration in three novels by Tessa McWatt, in which interlocking concerns with Relation and geography are reflected in and on bodies that have traced paths throughout the Caribbean, North America, and England. McWatt's narratives weave together her native Guyana, Barbados, London, and locations in Canada-most often Toronto but also Montreal. Through her mapping of Caribbean migrations, McWatt explores the intersections of family and geography, of bodies and memory, and of fragmented genealogies. In all three novels, characters' bodies carry traces of Caribbean history both personal and communal, experiencing traumas rooted in colonialism: violent loss, suicide, madness, forced assimilation, and other forms of rupture. The paths that McWatt maps move from excavation and burial of the past to personal mourning and forgiveness, to both a return "home" and an outward movement in the creation of new relations and an acceptance of "this body" as the key site of identity and healing.
