Abstract
This chapter contrasts high-skilled Indian professionals in the tar sands contemporarily with working-class Punjabis and Sikh retired workers in the lumber mills and cannery industries in British Columbia from the 1960s to the 1990s. Drawing upon interviews, I trace how Indians, across these differing extractive zones, position themselves as the “model” and “steady” workers and render Indigenous peoples as the “unmodel” Others. The chapter argues that while race, gender, and class may structurally marginalize the labor of diasporic Indians in these different industries, their labor remains complicit, wittingly or unwittingly, in settler colonial processes. The chapter also highlights the spatial and material intimacies that working-class jobs allowed between Indigenous and Indian workers in British Columbia, as compared to the lack of such intimacies in Alberta.
