Abstract
This chapter explores the life of James Franklin, who was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan to African-Canadian parents. James remembered relative racial harmony in Ypsilanti until the large influx of southerners, Black and white, who worked at the nearby Willow Run bomber plant during World War II. James left high school in 1942 to work at Willow Run. Drafted a year later, James served in Europe with an all-Black engineering unit. He also drove supply trucks as part of the Red Ball Express. After the war, James found work in the Rouge foundry, then left for a better job at Kaiser-Frazer until the company folded in 1953. He returned to the Rouge, but layoffs continually disrupted his employment. Religion was the foundation of his family life.
