Abstract
The Life and Music of Booker "Bukka" White is the first full-length biography of country blues musician Booker "Bukka" White, who was born around November 12, 1905, on a farm ten miles south of Houston, Mississippi, near the community of Sparta. When he died on February 26, 1977, Booker White had played music and written songs for more than sixty years. The grandson of a former slave, he overcame difficult circumstances to put together a remarkable career. After developing his talent for music in and around his home region in northeastern Mississippi, he made his first records in Memphis in 1930. He would not record again until 1937—the same year he was sent to the Mississippi Penal Farm in Parchman for killing a man. After talent scout Lester Melrose secured his release, White recorded twelve songs in Chicago in March 1940 that are considered among the finest in country blues. Upon his release from Parchman Farm, he relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, and fashioned a new life working as a welder's assistant until he was "rediscovered" in 1963. White's second career in music took him throughout the United States, to Canada, and on three tours of Great Britain and Europe with the American Folk Blues Festival. In 1990, he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.
