Abstract
Abstract This chapter reviews the history of mental health care in Canada, from an institutional era to the current version of community care. Ongoing problems such as the overrepresentation of the mentally ill among the homeless and criminal-justice-involved populations are highlighted. It is noted that mental health is underfunded relative to other areas of health care, with most of the funding and governance being borne by the provinces because of the constitutional division of powers in Canada. There is discussion of the lack of access to evidence-based mental health interventions including supported housing models such as Housing First. It is noted that mental health care continues to be biomedical in orientation, due in part to the fact that only hospital and physician services are covered by provincial medical service plans, this despite the evidence base and potential cost-effectiveness of, and demand for, psychological treatments.
