Abstract
PV023 / #772 Poster Topic: AS04 - Biomarkers Background/Purpose Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease characterized by the production of variety of autoantibodies that can form immune complexes and deposit in tissues, causing inflammation and organ damages. This study aimed to investigate the level of interleukin 8 (IL-8) in the serum of SLE patients. Methods In total, 156 SLE patients (109 active and 47 inactive patients) and 104 healthy subjects were evaluated. The serum levels of IL-8 were determined by chimiluminescent assay. Results In this study, a higher IL-8 serum concentration was observed in SLE patients compared to healthy controls (125.84 pg/ml vs 3.47 pg/ml, P= 0.000). Moreover, serum IL-8 level was also significantly higher in active SLE patients and showed positive correlation with the SLEDAI score (P = 0.022, r = 0.324). Conclusions These data suggest that IL-8 may be a useful biomarker for disease activity in SLE patients.
